While We Wait

I Am My Own Harshest Critic

I was walking past a shop-front art exhibition earlier today. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a woven sculpture that put me on an interesting train of thought.

It’s important to note -with respect to the artist- that I didn’t like the work. But something in it made me catch myself in that dismissive state of mind. Right then, I decided instead to notice the craftspersonship, textures, shapes and presence of the piece. I thought:

“this is a material manifestation of one person’s conceptual and technical exploration.

For the artist, that object is a physical representation of the nexus between what they understand and what they are trying to understand”.

……or something along those lines.

In the blink of an eye, that artwork (which I almost missed)  catalysed a more receptive, compassionate way of looking at art.

Now if I can just apply it to my own work…..
